A course offered by IBM’s Cognitive Class, explaining Data Science from the basics to hands-on data analysis with the best open-source tools available, on to the methodology and language that are most useful for aspiring data scientists.
This free learning path currently consists of one course that introduces you to Data Science from a practitioner point of view, to courses that discuss topics such as data compilation, preparation and modeling throughout the life-cycle of data science from basic concepts and methodologies to advanced algorithms. It also discusses how to get some practical knowledge with open source tools, and introduces you to one of the most popular programming languages used by data scientists: R.
In most courses (with few exceptions), review questions are worth 40% of the mark, and the final one-hour exam is worth 60%. Successfully passing the exam gets you an IBM-recognized badge. The course passing grade is 60%.

Data Science 101
The art of uncovering the insights and trends in data has been around since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians used census data to increase efficiency in tax collection and they accurately predicted the flooding of the Nile river every year. Since then, people working in data science have carved out a unique and distinct field for the work they do, this field is data science. In this course, we will meet some data science practitioners and we will get an overview of what data science is today.
Data Science Hands-on with Open Source Tools
Learn and try out the most popular open data science tools like Jupyter Notebooks, RStudio IDE, Apache Zeppelin, OpenRefine, and more. Tools are available to use directly via Cognitive Class Labs (Data Scientist Workbench).
Data Science Methodology
Grab your lab coat, beakers, and pocket calculator … wait what? Wrong path! Fast forward and get in line with emerging data science methodologies that are in use and are making waves or rather predicting and determining which wave is coming and which one has just passed.
Are you ready to dive head-first into R? In just a few hours you’ll learn how to write your own R code, learn about R’s data structures and create your own functions. You’ll even be able to import data and do some operations. Try our hands-on exercises as we guide your first steps into your data science journey with R.
Who Is It For?
